The Biliopancreatic Diversion with Duodenal Switch, hereafter referred to as BPD-DS or more commonly, simply “DS” is a [[Combination Procedure | combination procedure]]. It combines the features of both restrictive and malabsorptive procedures. In this procedure, a portion of the stomach actually is removed restricting the amount of food that can be consumed in a single sitting. In addition to the stomach becoming much smaller, the small intestines are rerouted into two channels to add a malabsorptive component to the surgery. This allows patients to achieve and maintain the best long term percentage of excess weight loss of all modern weight loss surgery procedures.
