Incontinence

Description:
Incontinence is the unintentional loss of urine, or uncontrollable stool or bowel movements. Pelvic trauma, spinal chord damage, caffeine, and medications are common causes of urinary incontinence. Additional causes are decreased mobility, impaired thinking, and obesity. Fecal incontinence is caused by weakening of the sphincter muscles often due to age or injury resulting from pregnancy, or obesity.

Symptoms of Incontinence:

  • Inability to control bowel movements or urinary functions


Treatment:
Bowel incontinence is treated by: medication, biofeedback, exercise and / or surgery. Urinary incontinence is treated by: pelvic muscle rehabilitation, behavioral therapies, pharmacological therapies, and surgery.
